The Tradition Continues
1968 - 2018
Celebrating 50 Years
For more than 49 years the Houston Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, has helped to promote and preserve Gospel music, its traditions, and heritage through a variety of concerts, workshops, seminars, and other ministry tools. Started by the late, great James Cleveland the tradition continues even today.

Shortly after organizing the parent organization in 1967, the brilliant Rev. James Cleveland, along with Thurston Frazier, traveled to Houston and met with two of the gospel music giants in the city at that time, namely Willie Thornton and Jesse Williams. That very historical meeting resulted in the eventual organization of the Houston Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. The late Rev. W. Leo Daniels was appointed the first Texas State Representative. Under Rev. Daniels’ leadership, the chapter grew enormously, both numerically and spiritually. Some of the charter members of the Houston Chapter include Wilma Bivens, and V. Michael McKay, the late Rev. Eugene Williams, Jesse Williams, Lee Ida Brown Campbell, Willie Thornton, Shirley Joiner, Alvin Dread and Barbara McCloud, just to name a few.

In 1990, Lee Ida Brown Campbell, Chapter Representative, appointed Elder Timothy Thompson to the position of 1st Assistant Chapter Representative, where he served faithfully under her leadership. In 2001, Lee Ida was elevated to Chapter Representative Emeritus and Elder Timothy Thompson was elevated to the position of Chapter Representative. Under his leadership, the Chapter has experienced continuous growth and increased energy and vitality. Elder Thompson is a visionary with plans to grow and move the Chapter to the next level of excellence. His ambition, God-inspired wisdom, concern, and leadership abilities position him for success.
